The Killeen ISD Board of Trustees has named Dr. King Davis as interim superintendent, effective Aug. 11. Davis brings more than three decades of experience in public education, including 10 years as a superintendent and a track record of strong leadership, academic growth, and community engagement.
“The Board was united in selecting an experienced, student-focused leader who could bring stability and vision to our district during this important transition,” said Board President Brett E. Williams. “Dr. Davis has made it clear that he is committed to embracing our students, our staff, and our community wholeheartedly during his time with us. We are excited to welcome him to the KISD family.”
Davis most recently served as superintendent of Sheldon ISD for eight years, where he led a district turnaround from “Improvement Required” to a consistent “B” rating and balanced an $11 million budget deficit in a single fiscal year. He previously served as superintendent of Wharton ISD, deputy superintendent in Everman ISD, and assistant superintendent in Crosby ISD. His leadership and classroom experience also includes roles in Mesquite, Corsicana, Dallas and Lufkin ISDs.
“There is one credo that I live by,” Davis said. “Strong communities build strong schools, and strong schools build strong communities. This school district and community have the heart and ability to do great things, and I’m honored for the opportunity to serve both during this transition.”
Davis holds a Doctor of Education degree from the University of St. Thomas, as well as a bachelor’s and a master’s degree from Stephen F. Austin State University.
With Davis in place, the Killeen ISD Board of Trustees will now shift its focus to recruiting and selecting a permanent superintendent.

The day emphasized key themes such as raising the standard, communication, leadership roles and the utmost importance of maintaining academic excellence within athletics in order to mold high-level student-athletes who are champions on and off of the playing surface.
The event also featured encouraging remarks from KISD Deputy Superintendent for Operations Scott Hequembourg, Assistant Superintendent for Administrative Services Susan Buckley, Executive Director for Boys Athletics Matt Carroll, Executive Director for Girls Athletics Latisha Williams, Fellowship of Christian Athletes area director Andrea Womack, and special guest speaker David Wetzel.
Wetzel, currently the Executive Director of the "B" Association at Baylor University, began his coaching career as an assistant at Ellison High School from 1992 to 1997 and later served as head coach at Killeen High School from 2000 to 2003. In his inspiring keynote address, Wetzel thanked the coaches for their dedication and urged them to embrace their roles as servant leaders.
